Oratorical Contest
The subject for all orations is to be predetermined by Key Club International and posted on the Key Club International website. The subject matter of the oration and the presentation must be original and completely developed by each orator.
Note: A Key Clubber must attend the District Convention to participate. International judging criteria is used for this contest. Registration takes place at the district convention. There will be a first, second, third, and honorable mention winners in the Pennsylvania District. The first place winner will present his/her speech at a district general session. The winners are not forwarded to compete in the International contest.

- Subject for all orations is predetermined by Key Club International.
- Subject matter of the oration and the presentation must be original and completely developed by each orator. These factors will be considered equally in determining who is to receive the awards.
- Orators will be allowed a maximum of five minutes for his/her presentation. Exceeding the time limit may result in a penalty.
- Orators must be an official member in good standing with Key Club International and his/her local club.
- Awarding points will be based on the following criteria:
- SPEECH–75 Points
- Clarity of message and projection of idea…….. 20 Points
- Depth........................................................... 10 Points
- Originality...................................................... 10 Points
- Organization.................................................. 20 Points
- Reference...................................................... 5 Points
- Grammar/word choice................................... 10 Points
- DELIVERY–25 Points
- Posture (composure and gestures)............. 10 Points
- Voice (tone, effectiveness/pronunciation).....10 Points
- Attention of audience.................................... 5 Points
- SPEECH–75 Points
- At the convention, elimination trials will be held (time and place to be announced in the convention program), and no more than three orators may be selected to appear before the entire convention. (Applies to International only.)
- Three outstanding orators will receive suitable awards and recognition for their excellence in public speaking. (Applies to International only.)
- Oratorical finalists may be expected to address the convention.
- Decision of the judges is final and no changes, alterations or regradings will take place after the results have been certified by the judges, the chair of the contests and the board counselor of this contest.
Over the years, the Pennsylvania District has seen many clubs and individuals enter the contests and unfortunately has seen a number of clubs and individuals be disqualified because of various award criteria. The following entry tips/eligibility checklist is to be used to help highlight some of the important contest criteria that has changed or is sometimes overlooked. It is to be used to assist you in your completion of the awards, but does not substitute for the official criteria set in the Key Club International Guidebook.

Entry Tips/Eligibility Checklist
- The entry form for the oratorical contest will available at the Pennsylvania District Convention for Key Clubbers to fill out in the contest registration room on Friday or before the contest on Saturday. Please check the judging criteria and details in the current “Key Club International Guidebook”.
- Note: The entry form on-line at www.keyclub.org is for those going to the Key Club International Convention. It is not used at district level.
